The Nyack Library in Nyack, NY, holds a special place in my heart. Not only did I serve as a member of its Board of Trustees, but it was also my “home away from home” while pursuing my Ph.D. in literacy from 2018 to 2021.
The library’s architecture seamlessly blends contemporary design elements with preserved historical features, creating a visually striking juxtaposition where old and new complement each other beautifully. Within this inspiring setting, the Nyack Library became a sanctuary for me—a place of respite, restoration, and enlightenment. It also served as a vibrant community hub where I had the privilege of hosting numerous programs for my business endeavors, including:
- Numerous Valorena Publishing, Cocoa Kids Collection® book readings.
- Valorena Learning programs, such as The Emotion Commotion Workshops and Mental Health Awareness initiatives for children and families.
- The Nation Must Awake Memoir: Your Story is History series.
The library, its collection, community and constitution, has given me so much, and I was honored to contribute in return. As a dedicated steward of this cultural gem, I was honored to play a role in shaping its five-year strategic plan—preserving its historic edifice, strengthening its programs, and enhancing its operations to ensure it continues to serve generations to come.
Sincerely,
Dr. Valerie Williams-Sanchez
